The area has a large number of underground "villages", some of which have been developed as tourist sites.  This is at Rochmenier, where you will also find a troglodyte restaurant that's worth a visit (although you may need to book in advance).   A village below the ground
A piece of history   Many of these troglodyte sites function as a museum as well. Although often having little of value to display and usually reflecting a history of only 100 or 150 years ago, underground grottos like these have probably been used by human beings since the beginning.
Rochmenier is reasonably convenient to Passavant-sur-Layons but there are many other sites that repay a visit.
